A long, long time ago in a city far, far away, lived two humanoids: Bob and Bella. Bob and Bella were each trying to make a big change in their lives. Each had a dream for what they wanted to do, but each felt that such a change was not possible for them (not on this planet).
Each felt they were missing the One Essential Thing to allow them to succeed at their dream. Bella knew that she could not possibly get noticed and do well until she had more Yorg. Bob knew he wouldn’t have a chance at making this work unless he developed a whole heap of Zork.
Their friends would point out their many assets but each time they would shake their heads. Bob would look down and say “yes, I have plenty of yorg but that doesn’t matter, yorg isn’t valuable in the real world, what I need to be ‘good enough’ is zork“.
Meanwhile across town Bella sighed “sure, I have zork but it doesn’t matter, zork isn’t valuable in that field, what I need to be good enough is yorg“.
So Bella spent her time wanting to be like Bob, while Bob spent his time wanting to be like Bella.
This went on for years. In that time, Bella didn’t use her secret superpower of zork any more than she could help, and Bob squished down his yorg and hoped no one noticed (he spent a lot of time in classes to try to get rid of it).
One day, Bob and Bella met for the first time over a nice glass of blathiger-juinian. As they got to know one another, each felt creeping envy: “lucky thing. Life must be so EASY for them. If only I had their zork/yorg I’d be able to fulfil my dream!”
At the end of the evening, Bob and Bella went back to their separate houses, shut the door, shook their antennae, and decided that there was no point trying. Not with people like that around. So in their separate homes across the city, each pulled out a card on which they had spelled out their dream all those moons back… and each tore their card into shreds, dropping it in the bin, giving up on that crazy idea forever.
…. which was a pity, because had they stayed talking for a moment longer they would have realised an incredible co-incidence: on their cards were written exactly the same words. Bob and Bella shared the same dream.
And each was convinced the other had everything it took to get it (but that they themselves were not even close).
Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if they could each have seen themselves through the other’s eyes for just a moment? Just for long enough to realise they had exactly what it took to do what they wanted… if only they would stop trying to be more like the other (and less like themselves)?
“Whatever you get paid attention for is never what you think is most important about yourself.”
David Foster Wallace
For everything you think is too easy and obvious, for every trait or experience or quirk that you hardly even notice in yourself… there are hundreds of people out there who wish they had exactly that.
Hundreds of people who would think you are crazy for not valuing what you have and who you are, here and now.
What are you overlooking because it feels too simple, too easy, too obvious? That’s probably your secret superpower.
