Career change story: from PA to personal stylist

by Marianne Cantwell

If you think you can’t start working for yourself because you have no business experience, then you need to watch this video.

When Lizzie Edwards started her off on her own as a personal stylist, she was in her 30′s, and had:

  • No money (really, NO money)
  • No business, marketing, sales, website building, or any other entrepreneurial experience.
  • No experience working as a personal stylist

Here’s what she has now:

  • A thriving personal stylist business, running for 5 years.
  • A career that suits her down to the ground. Lizzie does work she loves, and makes people look and feel fabulous. (Not surprisingly, her clients love her, and recommend her to everyone they know).
  • A wealth of advice, from her personal experience of starting out, that she has been kind enough to share with YOU, below.

In this video, Lizzie gives you her story of how she got to where she is, and shares the single biggest thing that she did which elevated her above the ‘wishful thinkers’, into a real live Free Range Human.

(PS: Lizzie really IS this nice in person. She’s one of the few personal stylists I wouldn’t mind having rifle through my wardrobe! Check her out on Babet Style)

What do you think about Lizzie's story?

    Hi Marianne,

Think I heard Liz get up and speak at Kendall Summerhawk's event last October in Tuscon. Remember this story. She's got a lovely web site too.

Yes, we often believe we don't have any skills because the people that dole out the skills don't want us to find out that our skills lie within us. Life is anything but linear!

Love the name of your blog – just terrific! Will stop by again to read more.

    Enjoy!

Hi Marianne, great story! I love how Lizzie talks about how she started and that the key is really so simple: do the little things, keep doing what needs to get done and before you know it, five years down the road, you have a sustainable, profitable business.

As for making something happen with no money or no experience, this is a beautiful reality for many with an entrepreneurial spirit and sense of adventure. Too many people allow themselves to get intimidated because of the millions of things they lack. But the truth is, there's no shortage of examples of folks whose so-called “deficits” didn't stop them from making their dream come true.

Thanks for your comment Giulietta! I love the line about life being anything but linear. Nicely put!

Great point – focussing on what we lack is a sure-fire way to never do anything. Thanks for your comment and I look forward to hearing more from you!

Really enjoyed the story – can relate to a lot of this as I'm starting my own business currently after 10 years in IT. Lizzie is right, its focussing on the small but important tasks one by one, also remembering to take time regularly to reflect on all that you've achieved, it can really help keep the momentum up. Enjoying your site and emails too!
